What to Bring to Your Tax Appointment

Use this checklist as your personal guide to organizing and compiling your tax documents. Doing so can save you time and remind you of the tax documents that pertain to you based on your circumstances throughout the year.

Personal Data

  • Driver’s license(s)
  • Social security card(s)
  • Last year’s federal and state tax returns
  • Social security numbers and birth dates of dependents
  • Bank routing and account numbers for direct deposit or withdrawal of tax refund/payments
  • Adoption records (if applicable)

Savings and Investments

  • Sales of stocks, investments/1099-B
  • IRA, SEP, Keogh, and Roth contributions
  • Cryptocurrency transaction records (if applicable)
  • HSA or FSA contributions and distributions/1099-SA

Income Data

  • W-2 earning statement(s)
  • Self-employed business income and expenses form/1099 Miscellaneous
  • Pension or retirement income/1099-R
  • Unemployment income/1099-G
  • Social security income/SSA-1099
  • Alimony paid or received
  • Rental income and expenses
  • Investment income/1099-DIV, 1099-INT, K-1
  • State tax refund amount/1099-G
  • Income from gig work or platform services (e.g., Uber, Etsy, Airbnb)
  • Gambling winnings/loss statements
  • Jury duty payments
  • Scholarships or fellowship grants

Family and Medical

  • Affordable Care Act/Marketplace annual insurance/Proof of insurance
  • Medical and dental expenses
  • Child care expenses and provided information
  • Medical mileage information
  • Adoption-related expenses
  • Long-term care insurance premiums
  • Dependent care provider information (name, address, and tax ID)

Real Estate Data

  • Mortgage or home equity loan interest paid form/1098
  • Real estate taxes paid
  • Record of new home purchase or sale
  • Records for energy-efficient home improvements (solar, wind, geothermal, etc.)
  • Rental property improvements and depreciation schedules

State and Federal Taxes

  • Federal and state estimated taxes paid
  • Personal property taxes (DMV)
  • Sales taxes
  • Foreign taxes paid
  • Prior year carryover of losses or tax credits
  • First-time homebuyer credit repayment information (if applicable)

Education Expenses (Unreimbursed)

  • College tuition statement/1098-T
  • Classroom expenses for teachers
  • Tuition, books, supplies/equipment needed for a course of study, notebooks, ebooks, education fees, non-academic fees, study activity fees, athletic fees
  • Student loan interest/1098-E
  • 529 plan distribution and expense records

Other

  • Charitable donations, cash and non-cash
  • Mileage records for travel to and from Goodwill, Salvation Army, charity events, volunteer work, etc.
  • Business vehicle expenses (mileage, gas, maintenance, insurance)
  • Casualty and theft loss documentation

  • Records of any major purchases (for potential sales tax deduction)
